While the Caribbean waters around Cozumel are generally quite calm, travelling on a speedboat does involve natural bouncing and ocean swells. If you know you are prone to motion sickness, or even if you are just unsure, we highly recommend planning ahead!
The Golden Rule: Prevention is Key
Motion sickness medication is incredibly effective, but it must be taken before you feel sick. We strongly advise considering an over-the-counter preventative (such as Dramamine or Bonine) 30 to 60 minutes before you board the boat. Once you are already feeling nauseous on the water, medication will unfortunately not help.
If you prefer natural remedies, ginger drops or acupressure wristbands are great additions to bring along.
Consider the Catamaran
If you are highly susceptible to seasickness, we highly recommend booking our luxury catamaran tour. Because a catamaran has two hulls rather than one, it is significantly wider and more stable on the water. It does not “roll” or rock side-to-side nearly as much as our standard monohull speedboats, making it our smoothest, most comfortable ride.
What to Do If You Feel Sick Onboard
If you do start to feel unwell during the tour, please do not be embarrassed – our crew handles this all the time and is here to help! Let your captain or guide know immediately, and follow these tried-and-true marine tips:
- Look at the Horizon: Keep your eyes fixed on a stationary point on the horizon. Do not look down at your phone, a camera, or the floor.
- Move to the Back: The back of the boat (the stern) experiences the least amount of bouncing.
- Stay in the Breeze: Do not go into an enclosed marine bathroom if you feel sick, and your boat has one. Stay out on the deck where you can feel the fresh air and the cool ocean breeze.
