The Caribbean sun is beautiful but fierce, and we of course recommend appropriate UV protection for your skin whilst enjoying your time outdoors on our island.
However, we are equally mindful that many of the chemicals contained within sunscreen lotions (even reportedly ‘reef friendly’ products) are directly linked to severe damage and degradation of marine ecosystems. As part of one of the largest coral reef systems in the world, we have a duty to protect this habitat for future generations.
In the first instance, please consider wearing a SPF-rated long-sleeve rash vest or similar to protect your skin. This can help reduce or eliminate the need for sunscreen lotion whilst in the water.
If you must apply sunscreen to your skin, ensure it is truly reef-safe (not many are!) and apply it no less than 30 minutes before your tour departure time. This helps reduce the amount of chemicals that end up in the ocean, and stops our boat decks from becoming overly slippery.
Under no circumstances should you apply sunscreen at any point during the tour, as this becomes a dangerous slip hazard on our boats. If you wish to limit your UV exposure, stay in the shade as much as possible, and wear appropriate clothing.
